The CLS Curriculum

Under the program, students gain the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare legal documents, conduct legal research, and demonstrate knowledge of the legal system. Our courses help students understand the responsibilities of a paralegal, as well as encourage them to apply critical thinking and analysis to fact patterns. We also teach students how to conduct themselves professionally and abide by the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Paralegal Code of Ethics.
CLS’ paralegal certificate course syllabi vary according to the student’s chosen educational platform:

• Online. Students must complete 14 weeks of the online course, which consists of two sessions, Paralegal I and Paralegal II. Paralegal I (Introduction to Paralegal Studies) discusses the American legal system and how students can contribute to it. Paralegal II (Advanced Paralegal Concepts) teaches students the advanced skills of legal writing, legal research, appellate procedures, and formal and informal advocacy.
• Live Lecture. This 6-session course trains students to investigate complex fact patterns, interview witnesses, prepare cases for courtroom litigation, and extensive research of the law. Our live lectures are practice-oriented and relate to areas of law in which paralegals are needed the most.
• Text-Only format. This course is available to students who, due to schedule or location conflicts, cannot take the course online or attend live lectures.
